HELE ANA I NA HOKU (journey to the stars) with us on this extravagant tour featuring breathtaking views from Haleakala. Come learn about the history of Maui and the native Hawaiians, and discover the ancient art of wayfinding: navigating by the stars. Your visit to the House of the Sun will lead you through sacred places to the summit of the world’s largest dormant volcano. Listen to legends passed down for generations that perpetuate the Hawaiian culture. Together as an ohana (family), we will experience the responsibility we have as malihini (guests) here in this magical place. Let us be your navigators to help you not just see, but also hear and feel the changes as the sun goes to sleep and the stars awake.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
LOSE YOURSELF in an otherworldly experience like never before… Join us, and our navigators will captivate you with legends and lore, cultural immersion, and all the night sky has to offer on the most magical island in the world, Maui!
With door to door transportation, an indulgent dinner, an awe-inspiring sunset view and a spectacular, unobstructed celestial panorama, Hoku Hawaii Tours will certainly be the most memorable experience of your Maui vacation.
Our experience begins at your doorstep where our navigators will greet and welcome you on board. We proceed to central Maui for a rest stop and to gather our evening meal. We then gently ascend the legendary volcano named Haleakala. Enjoy views of the West Maui Mountains, central valley, and the northern coastline of Maui. Continuing to the higher elevations, we begin to experience climate change and much cooler temperatures.
Enjoy your Kula Lodge sunset dinner experience before traversing the rolling hills and pastureland which blanket the western face of Haleakala, we will pause for photo opportunities at the 5,000’ or 6,500’ elevation sites (time and weather permitting). Once within the National Park, we will make a rest stop at the Park Headquarters Visitor’s Center where you will have the opportunity to view one of the rarest endemic plant species in the world, the famous ‘Ahinahina, or Sliversword. With its thick leaves and tiny silver hair, its majestic beauty will surely delight you! Each plant may live up to fifty years and will only bloom once in its lifetime in such a delicate ecosystem.
Advancing to the Crater Visitor’s Center at 9,740’, we will position ourselves for spectacular stargazing above the clouds. We will have hot coffee & tea available at the top as our navigator arranges our night viewing equipment. Our premium telescope is computerized and equipped with GPS, enabling us to map every detail the sky. The Mahina (moon) along with the Hoku (stars) will feel an arm’s length away! All the while, the endangered ‘Ua’u birds call out as they burrow in the surrounding wilderness (May through September).
Upon conclusion of our celestial encounter at the crater’s rim, our navigator will gingerly descend Haleakala, ensuring the utmost comfort for everyone. Once returning to sea level, we will make a final rest stop in central Maui and then on to your resort. We bid you a warm aloha and leave you with a new sense of awareness which will last a lifetime.
